1 cup chopped onion
1 green pepper, chopped or cut into strips
2 tbsp butter
1-1/2 lbs. lean ground beef
1 tsp. seasoned salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 tbsp. sugar
1 quart tomatoes (or 2 cans diced tomatoes -- 14.5 oz each)
1 can tomato sauce
2 cups water
1 package (8 oz) uncooked wide egg noodles
8 oz. mozzarella cheese, sliced

In Dutch oven or large frying pan, saute onion and green pepper in 2 tablespoons butter for 3 minutes. Add ground beef. Brown. Add seasoned salt, pepper and sugar. Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce and water. Heat meat mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

In 9x13 baking pan, layer tomato-meat mixture and noodles. (Note: Make certain noodles are well covered with sauce.) Top with mozzarella. Cover pan with aluminum foil. Bake in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.

Cut and serve as for lasagna.

This was not my grandma's recipe, but I got it from Eleanor Ostman, who had a column in the Pioneer Press. Ken really likes this, so I have started making it regularly.

When I use ground beef that is 85-15 rather than extra lean, I drain the grease after browning the ground beef and before adding the seasonings.
