2/3 cup of a mixture of softened shortening and butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cup sifted flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 6 oz package chocolate chips (about 1/4 cup)

Mix all ingredients well. Preheat oven to 375º. Drop batter by rounded teaspoons full onto an ungreased baking sheet, about 2" apart. Bake until delicately browned, about 8-10 minutes. Cookies should still be soft. Cool slightly before removing from baking sheet.
