1 qt ribbon cane syrup
2 c sugar
1½ c shortening
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp allspice
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp ginger
2 tsp nutmeg
1 orange peel, grated
4 eggs
1 tsp salt
2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp anise extract (optional)

Directions:

Boil syrup, sugar and shortening just until boiling point.

Cool then add the other ingredients, Mix well.

Form dough into long rolls the size of your finger. Cut into ½ inch pieces

Bake in 375º oven until brown.

Mom mom delighted on making these. They are good but a little tedious to make. She made them every year for Christmas. They do not raise. They really are the size of a nut and are great with a cup of coffee.

This is the smell of tradition.
