4 C Flour
1 tsp Baking powder
1 C Shortening
Cold water
2 Cans cherries, drained and reserve juice
2 C Sugar
2 T Cornstarch
1 tsp Nutmeg
1 tsp Vanilla
Red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour and baking powder; add shortening and mix well. Add enough cold water to make a stiff dough. Roll out on floured surface and cut into 2½-inch rounds.
In a saucepan, add reserved cherry juice; sugar, cornstarch and nutmeg and cook slowly until thick. Add cherries, vanilla and a dash of food coloring; mix well. Chill until ready to use.
Place 1 tablespoon filling on half of pastry round, fold over and seal edges with a little milk. Repeat with rest of pastry rounds. Chill for at least 1 hour.
Fry in 3-inches of deep fat at 475º F on a thermometer, until golden brown. Turn once while cooking. (Can try using other fruits, such as peaches.)
