1/2 cup shortening (margarine)
1/ 2cup brown sugar (packed)
1 egg yolk (keep egg white)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
chopped pecans or coconut
jam, jelly or confectioners icing

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together shortening, brown sugar, yolk and vanilla thoroughly. Sift together flour and salt. Roll into 1 inch balls. Dip into egg white. Roll in finely chopped pecans (or coconut. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 5 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove from oven. Quickly press thumb on top of each cookie and return to oven and bake 5 - 8 minutes longer until golden brown. Cool. Place a little jam or jelly or confectioners sugar icing in thumbprints.
