½ cup shortening
½ cup butter
1⅓ cups sugar
2 t vanilla
2 eggs
3 cups flour
1 t salt (omit ½ t of salt if butter is salted)
¾ t baking powder
2 T milk

Royal Icing
3 T meringue powder (order on the Internet)
4 cups powdered sugar
6 T water
½ t vanilla (use clear vanilla if you want white icing)

Cookies:
Preheat oven to 375º.
Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, beat well. Mix together flour, salt and baking soda. Stir into creamed mixture along with milk. Chill several hours or overnight. Roll on a lightly-floured board to ¼ inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Royal icing:
Beat all ingredients together until stiff peaks form (about 10 minutes). Use food color gel to color.
