¼ cup butter
¼ cup shortening
¾ cup sugar
1 egg
½ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
½ cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla
(2) 1-oz. squares unsweetened chocolate
1¾ cups sifted flour
½ cup chopped walnuts

Cream butter, shortening and add sugar gradually. Beat well. Beat in egg. Melt chocolate, stir into creamed mixture. Mix dry ingredients together, add to chocolate mixture alternately with milk. Stir in vanilla and nuts. Using a teaspoon, drop inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake in hot oven (400º) for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 3 dozen.
 

Buttercream Icing
Ingredients:

1 cup Butter Crisco OR 1 cup Crisco + ½ tsp. butter flavoring
2 boxes 10X sugar
½ cup water
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. clear vanilla
1 tsp. almond extract
Directions:
Directions:
Cream Crisco. In small bowl, stir together water and salt, then add almond extract, vanilla, butter flavoring (if using regular Crisco). Gradually add 10X sugar to creamed Crisco alternating with water mixture. Mix all ingredients at low speed, when mixed, beat at high speed for 5 minutes.
