Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 tbsp. milk
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
3 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
Powdered sugar

Directions:
Directions:
1. Dissolve baking soda in milk.

2. Cream together butter and sugar. Add vanilla, baking soda mixture, and eggs.

3. Sift together flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Add to creamed mixture, adding in additional flour (up to 1 1/2 cups) to make a dough stiff enough to roll out.

4. Chill dough to improve handling.

5. Roll out dough on surface lightly dusted with powdered sugar.

6. Bake at 375ºF for 8-10 minutes, cookies are puffed and dry looking but not golden in color.

Cookies rolled to approximately 1/4 inch gives a cake-like cookie. Those rolled thinner make a crisper cookie.
