Crust:
2½ cups flour
2 Tbs sugar
1 cup shortening
pinch of salt

Apples peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

Custard:
2½ cups milk
3 Tbs sugar
pinch of salt
3 Tbs corn starch
3 egg yolks

1 tsp vanilla

Meringue:
3 egg whites
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp vanilla
6 Tbs sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Mix crust ingredients to a crumble and pat to the bottom of 9x13 pan
Peel and slice apples to half fill pan and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
Bake at 400º until apples are done.
Make custard while torte is baking.
Add custard ingredients to sauce pan and cook until thick.
Add vanilla to custard and pour over apples.

Make Meringue
Combine egg whites, salt and vanilla and beat to a stiff foam. Add sugar 1 tablespoon at a time. Continue beating until mixture forms moist peaks.

Spread over custard and brown in oven under broiler.
