1 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. light or dark molasses (do not use blackstrap or cooking molasses)
2 T. white vinegar
5 c. flour
1 1/2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
2 t. ground ginger
1 t. cinnamon
1 t. ground cloves

Directions:
Cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg, molasses and vinegar. Sift all dry ingredients together and then blend gradually into wet ingredients. Dough will be stiff and just come together when you press it in your hands. Divide dough in two even pieces, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30-90 minutes. Preheat oven to 350. Roll out chilled dough to 1/2" thick on a floured surface. Use cookies cutters to cut dough and place on parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Decorate.
