1-1/2 cups white sugar
4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup LARD or 1 cup PLUS 2 Tablespoons shortening
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sour milk

Option: chocolate chips, raisins, or chopped dates can be added to dough.
Directions:
Directions:
Mix sugar, flour, salt, soda; mix in lard or shortening. Mix like pie dough.

TO ROLL out dough:
Put 1 egg in measuring cup, add vanilla finish filling with sour milk.
Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick, cut cookies of desired shapes.
Decorate with sprinkles, raisins, chocolate chips or your choice.

TO DROP cookie:
Add 1 egg and vanilla to cookie dough.
Measure 1 cup sour milk, add to dough and mix well.
Drop tablespoons of dough on cookie sheet.
Sprinkle a pinch of sugar on top, omit if adding something.

Bake either cookie in 350ºF oven on greased cookie sheet for 8 to 12 minutes until golden brown on the bottom. Don't over cook or cookie will be dry.To Make Sour Milk:
Add 1 Tbsp. of lemon juice to 1 cup of milk. Let set for at least 5 minutes to curdle.

This recipe has been in the family since the 1930's, when the parents worked in the school's kitchen making lunch. We made these cookies often at home. I have now passed the recipe on to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren for their enjoyment.
