Ingredients: Betty Crocker Delights Devils Food or Dark Chocolate Cake WITH THE PUDDING IN THE MIX.
FUDGE FROSTING (or Candy) X 2 for layer cake. Batches must be made separately! 1 C sugar 2 T cocoa 1 T butter 1 T short of ½ C cream 1 T white syrup

Directions:CAKE: Make the cake according to the package directions. Bake in 8" round cake pans. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
FROSTING: Mix everything except the vanilla together in a saucepan & boil slowly to: soft ball stage for frosting, firm ball stage for fudge. Drop small amount into cold water to test. Stir in vanilla. Whisk until slightly cool. Spread on top of one cake round. Allow it to "run off", pulling run off up from the cake plate onto the sides of the cake. It will harden as you spread it and it cools. Make a second batch of frosting. Place second cake round on top of the first and frost top allowing extra to "run off". Pull run off up from the cake plate onto the sides of the cake. It will harden as you spread it and it cools. |

Notes: This was the birthday cake that Gram (Phyllis Rassmussen (Smith) (Grad)) was famous for. She made it for everyone in the Smith family, for every birthday. Except she never made it for me! Until my 50th birthday! It was as amazing as I imagined it would be.
