One cup shortening (or 1/2 cup margarine )
1 cup sifted confectioners sugar
One egg
1 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy
1/2 cup sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375°. Mix shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla flavoring thoroughly. Mix the flour and salt, stir into shortening mixture.Divide in halves and put food coloring in 1/2.

Make strips out of 1 teaspoon dough and roll on lightly floured board. Twist one red strip and one uncolored strip together, and lightly place on an ungreased baking sheet. Make a curve on one end for candycane shape. Bake about nine minutes until lightly browned. Remove and cover with crushed candy and sugar.
