For Cake:
3 cups applesauce
1 ½ cups shortening or butter
6 cups sifted flour
1 box candied fruit
1 ½ cups chopped dates
3 cups raisins
2 tablespoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons salt
3 teaspoons baking soda

For Decoration:
maraschino cherries
green gumdrops

Directions:
Directions:
Pour enough boiling water over raisins to cover and let stand while preparing the rest of the ingredients. Sift and measure flour in large bowl. Add spices, salt, baking soda, and mix well. Add drained raisins, dates, and candied fruit. Mix until fruits are covered well with flour. Mix in the applesauce, sugar, and butter. Combine all items and blend until thoroughly mixed. Grease and flour baking pan(s). Bake in three smaller loaf pans, or one larger cake pan. For decoration, alternate green gumdrops and maraschino cherries along the top. Bake at 325º for 60 minutes.
