1 cup sugar
1¼ cup molasses
1 cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup sour milk or hot water
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp cloves
¼ tsp ginger
1 heaping tsp baking soda
3-4 cups flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar, molasses, shortening and egg. Dissolve baking soda into milk or water. Stir into batter. Sift flour with dry ingredients and stir into batter. Chill and roll out or drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet and flatten with glass dipped in sugar. Bake at 325º for 12-15 minutes.
