1 C. Sugar
2/3 C shortening (1/2 butter 1/2 Crisco)
1 Egg
4 T. Molasses
2 C Flour
2 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Ginger
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

Mix all ingredients together. Roll into small balls & roll each ball in sugar. DO NOT FLATTEN. Cook on cookie sheet for 10 minutes at 350º.

Dark molasses is what I use, also, original recipe indicated "greased cookie sheet", but with the non-stick cookie sheets we have today, this is not necessary.

Cookies will flatten as the bake, leave room for each ball to spread out.

A Pampered Chef® small cookie scoop makes a perfect size ball. Or use a medium and pinch of a small piece. The ball ends up being about an 1-1.25" in diameter.


These were Dad's favorites, we made them every year we went to Madison for Christmas.
