1/3 c. shortening
1/3 c. butter
2 c. all-purpose flour
3/4 c. granulated sugar
1 egg
1 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp.vanilla
dash salt
1 c. sifted powdered sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
milk

In a large mixing bowl beat the shortening and butter with electric mixer on med. to high speed about 30 seconds or until softened.
Add about half the flour, then the granulated sugar, egg, milk, baking powder, vanilla and salt.
Beat until thoroughly combined, scraping the sides of bowl occasionally. Beat or stir the remaining flour. Divide dough in half.
Cover and chill for about 3 hrs. or until dough is easy to handle.
On a lightly floured surface, roll each half of the dough to 1/8 in. thickness.
Using 2 1/2 in. cookie cutters, cut dough into desired shapes.
Place 1 in apart onto ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake7 -8 minutes or until bottoms are very lightly browned at 375'
Cool on wire racks
In a small bowl combine the powdered sugar and 1/4 tsp vanilla and enough milk ( about 1 tbsp) to make a piping or icing consistency
