1C shortening; 1tsp. salt; 1tsp. vanilla extract; 2C sugar; 1 egg, well beaten; 5C flour; 4tsp. baking powder; ½ tsp. baking soda; 1C milk; red currant jelly

Directions:
Directions:
In large bowl, mix shortening, salt, vanilla, and sugar together. Add in beaten egg.

In separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and baking soda.

Alternate adding flour mix and milk to the large bowl.

Refrigerate 30 min or until ready to use.

Roll on a floured board. Cut out solid cookie, put on greased cookie sheet. Cut out an equal number of solid cookies and use a small doughnut cutter or another shape to cut out a center design.

Bake at 375º for 12-15 min. Allow cookies to cool completely.

Put a spoonful of currant jelly in the center of the solid cookie and cover with a cutout cookie (can dust with sugar). Press edges.

This cookie was one of Grammie's go-to Christmas cookies and the recipe came from her Mum. They are festive, delicious, and the recipe makes a ton of cookies - perfect for loading up grandchildren with sugar before the holidays!
