1 cup canning salt
2 quarts water
¼ cup alum plus water to cover
Vinegar
Sugar
Pickling spices

Directions:
Directions:
Slice cucumbers and place in a gallon-sized glass jar. Boil canning salt in 2 quarts of water. Pour over sliced cucumbers and soak one week.

Rinse and cover cucumbers with alum water (¼ cup alum with water to cover). Soak for 24 hours. Rinse and cover cucumbers with undiluted vinegar. Let sit for 6 hrs or overnight. Drain.

Place cucumbers in a gallon-sized jar by layers: cucumbers, sugar and pickling spices. More sugar may be added later if needed to make enough syrup to cover. Leave in jar until ready to eat.
