1 1/4 cup boiling water
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/3 cups flour
2 eggs
1 teas. cinnamon
1 teas. baking soda
1 teas. vanilla

Topping Ingredients:
3 tablespoons melted butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 egg yolks
1 1/2 cup coconut and chopped walnuts
3-4 tablespoons milk

(may want to make extra 1/2 batch of topping)

Preheat oven to 350º Grease a 9 X 13" pan.

Pour 1 1/4 cup boiling water over oatmeal. Let stand for 20 minutes.

Cream shortening and sugars. Beat in eggs, one at a time and vanilla. Mix together the flour, cinnamon and baking soda. Add flour mixture to shortening mixture. Stir in the oatmeal-water mixture which has stood for 20 minutes.

Pour into a 9 X 13" greased pan. Bake at 350º for 1 hour or until cake springs up when touched.

Mix together topping ingredients and spoon over warm cake. Return the cake to the oven and bake for 10 more minutes. Remove cake and cool on a rack.
