Directions:
Cream together: brown sugar, white sugar & shortening. Add the two eggs and beat. In a separate cup, mix cold coffee (1 cup) and 1 tsp. baking soda, stir and let stand. Sift 3½ C. flour & baking powder together then add to the creamed mixture. Next, add cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Add the cold coffee with soda to the mixture. Add the nuts. Drain the raisins and stir into the mixture. Drop by teaspoons onto a greased (spray Pam) cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 375º. The mixture will be stiffer than a cake batter, but creamier than cookie batter. Cook a "test" cookie and if it comes out too flat, add about ¼ C. flour.

Personal Notes:
This recipe is from Ethel, "Dada" Koenig. It was always a staple for our camping trips as Grandmother Luckey would bring them along as her contribution to a wonderful weekend in the mountains. They are similar to the "bars" that Marlin's mom made, but were in cookie form so you could grab a few on the run! The spices always make me think of fall.
