1/2 c soft shortening
1/4 c brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 c flour
1/2 tsp salt

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla together thoroughly. Stir in flour and salt. Roll into 1 inch balls. Dip balls into slightly beaten egg white. Role in finely chopped walnuts. Bake for 5 minutes at 375º. Remove from oven and quickly press a thumbprint gently into the top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake for another 8 minutes. Cool and then drip colored icing into the thumbprints.

Icing recipe is just a mixture of powdered sugar and milk with food coloring. Mix together until you have the correct consistency.

Grandma's favorite icing colors were always green and red. I grew up loving these cookies because they aren't very sweet except for the icing! Grandma made them every Christmas as you grew up!
