½ C shortening (Crisco) she always uses Crisco instead of butter so I don't deviate
½ C white sugar
½ C brown sugar
1 C flour
1 egg
2½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
½ C cocoa powder
½ C milk
1 tsp vanilla

Icing:
¼ butter
½ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
3 C confectioners sugar
¼ C milk

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350º
Combine flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa.
Mix sugars and shortening.
Add beaten egg and vanilla and mix well.
Add flour mixture and milk, alternately, mixing well after each addition.
Drop by large spoonfuls onto cookie sheet.
Bake 8 - 10 minutes checking after 8 minutes. (Cookies will not brown and should be a little soft- they harden as they cool).
Make icing.
Combine butter, salt, vanilla and 1 C sugar. Add milk and remaining sugar alternately, mixing until smooth and creamy.
Spread icing over cooled cookies.
Sprinkle with red or green sugar at Christmas.
