½ cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 ¾ cups sifted Gold Medal flour
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. soda
¼ cup thick sour milk or buttermilk
¾ cup broken pecans
1 cup dates, cut up into small pieces
1 cup red or green candied cherries, cut in quarters
Pecan halves

Preheat oven to 375º. Cream shortening with brown sugar, Beat in egg. Combine dry ingredients, then stir into mixture alternately with buttermilk. Add pecans, dates, and cherries. Combine well. Drop by small teaspoonfuls onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Place a pecan half onto each cookie. Bake 10 to 13 minutes in 375º oven.

1 8 ounce package Dromedary chopped dates is enough for 2 recipes. English walnuts can be used instead of pecans.

This was Dad's favorite Christmas cookie. The kids did not really like the dates, so Dad had plenty for himself!
