1 cup sugar
3/4 shortening or margarine softened
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. cloves

Directions:
Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl combine first 4 ingredients. Blend well and stir in remaining ingredients. Heat oven to 375º. Shape dough into 1 inch balls, roll balls in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheet (do not flatten balls, they will flatten in oven). Bake 8 - 10 minutes. Makes 48 cookies.

These are a soft chewy cookie. I got this recipe from my neighbor when we lived in Whitehorn in the 80s. She had two little boys and was always making cookies or some homemade treat for them. I used to take these to work and everyone would rave over them. As a result I have had to share this recipe with many of my co-workers.
