1⅓ c flour
½ t baking soda
8 T unsalted butter, softened
½ c sugar
½ c packed light brown sugar
1 large egg
¼ t salt
1½ t vanilla
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
¾ c chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Directions:
Position rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 375º. Grease cookie sheets. Whisk together thoroughly flour and baking soda in a small bowl and set aside.
Beat on medium speed until very fluffy and well blended butter and both sugars. Add egg, salt and vanilla; beat until well blended. Stir in flour mixture into the butter mixture until well blended and smooth. Stir in: chocolate chips and nuts.
Drop the dough by heaping measuring teaspoonfuls onto the sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Bake 1 sheet at a time, until the cookies are just slightly colored on top and rimmed with brown at the edges, 8-10 minutes. Rotate the sheet halfway through baking for even browning. Remove the sheet to a rack and let stand until the cookies firm slightly, 2 minutes. Transfer he cookies to racks to cool.
Makes about 36 1/2-inch cookies.
