Grandma's Sugar Cookies Recipe

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1 cups butter, softened (just take the butter sticks and put in a plate and wait for them to soften-you could micro-wave but most likely it will totally melt)

1 egg (large )

1 teaspoon vanilla ( get the real stuff not imitation)

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

2 1/2 cups all- purpose flour

1 teaspoon backing soda

1 teaspoon cream of tarter

Granulated sugar

Creamy Frosting:

1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1 /4 teaspoon salt

About 1 to 2 tablespoons half and half

Assorted food colors

For cookies:
Mix powdered sugar, butter, egg, vanilla and almond extract.
Stir in Flour, backing sold and cream of tartar. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours.

Heat oven to 375. Divide dough into halves.
Roll each half 3/16 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board. Cut into desired shapes with 2 1/2 inch cookie cutters:
Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
Place on lightly greased cookie sheet ( or use parchment paper-no mess with this)
Bake until edges are light brown, 7 to 8 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen

For frosting:
Mix powdered sugar, vanilla and salt.
Beat in half and half until smooth and spreading consistency.
Tint parts of frosting with food colors as directed. (use liquid food color for light colors, paste food color for deeper colors.
Paste food color is available through mail-order baking equipment stores)

Use sprinkles to decorate cookies after frosting.
