Directions:See Christmas Sugar Cookies recipe - make one batch, divide in two pieces of dough. Add 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the white dough. Add red food coloring to desired red color to other dough ball with no peppermint. Roll in plastic wrap and chill.
On a floured work surface, shape each dough into balls and then roll each ball into 1/4-inch-wide ropes, each about 6 inches long. For each cookie, carefully twist some of the red and white ropes of dough together and shape into a candy cane. Sprinkle candy cane dust on each cookie. Spread candy canes out on parchment paper or silicone lined cookie sheets and bake on the top shelf of the oven for about 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool before serving. |

Notes: This cookie may look easy but it takes patience. The dough needs to be rolled and twisted so it does not crack when picked up after baking. Too skinny and it will break, too fat and it will not look like a candy cane. The crushed candy cane can be used in place of the peppermint extract, or both for a more pepperminty cookie. These cookies are awesome with Hot chocolate - yum!
