Directions: |
Directions:Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add shortening to the flour mixture and mix well. The mixture will be crumbly. Slowly add the water until you create a dough. Kneed the dough, being cautious to not over kneed. The dough will start out as very sticky. Continue adding water as needed. Next, create 2in. balls of dough. Using a rolling pin, roll out the balls to a tortilla shape. (Flouring the surface you are using as well as your rolling pin will help you roll out the dough.) To cook the dough, you will need either a tortilla plate or a skillet. Put the plate or the skillet over medium-high heat. Place the tortilla in the hot skillet and cook until the dough becomes golden and 'bubbly.' Flip tortilla and cook other side until also golden and 'bubbly.' Repeat until all dough is cooked. |

Notes: The most difficult part of this recipe is the dough consistency. I grew up watching my grandma make these tortillas all the time. Watching and learning from her really made up a big part of my childhood and left me with very fond memories. The recipe does take some practice, but once you get the 'feel' for it, its a great recipe to have and share with kids. (My favorite part as a kid was when my grandma would let me roll out my very own tortilla!)
