Notes: Mom's sugar cookie recipe was no secret--it came from an old Betty Crocker cookbook. She may have modified it over the years--but most of her modifications remain her secret. She was like her mom--she could tell by the way the dough looked and smelled and tasted and felt in her hands when it was just right. We do know that she allowed the cookies to cool for a few minutes before removing them from the cookie sheets.
Her early sugar cookies were decorated with "cookie paint." Her "Egg Yolk Paint" was 1 egg yolk, 1/4 t water mixed with food coloring. (She preferred using paste food coloring.) She later started using paint made of evaporated milk and food color. She would "paint" the cookies with a paint brush and sprinkle with sugar before popping them into the oven. Her cookies decorated with Royal Icing came later. See her Royal Icing recipe under "Miscellaneous."
