My father's sister, Elvira Lindsey, used to make these every time we'd call to say we were headed over to Seneca for a visit. I'll never forget that wonderful smell that met us at the door. She would pour the kids a glass of milk, and we'd eat them while they were still warm and slightly gooey. Aunt Marian, another of Papa's sisters, would sit with us cousins and tell us scary stories about the Gray Lady that haunted some hospital far away. My mom, Betty Wilbanks Lindsey, could also turn these out in minutes. They always seem to set so well for her.

When I make them, they often turn into spoon cookies. So called because they won't set up for me and you have to use a spoon to eat them. Now my youngest, Melanie, can make them like her ancestors, and my son, Michael and his wife, Paige, are working on perfecting their own wonderful cookies. My oldest daughter and I join in by making sure they taste just they way they should. Oh, and Papa ALWAYS wants one, no matter how much he just ate.
