5 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 pinch salt
2 c sugar
1 c lard
2 eggs
1 c buttermilk (sour milk)
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together flour,baking powder,salt,sugar, lard ( or 2 c Crisco) - like pie dough. Add 2 eggs beaten, buttermilk
(substitute sour milk - ½ T lemon juice or white vinegar in measuring c fill with ½ c milk - stir - let stand for 5 minutes = sour milk) add 1 level tsp baking soda, 1 tsp vanilla, mix well. Chill. Use handfull of dough and roll out as thin as possible. Cut with cookie cutters. Put in 325º oven on flat cookie sheet for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool and frost.

This recipe has been used in our family since my Grandmother was married in the late 1800. Every year it is different, even though the ingredients are the same. It has something to do with the "moon" I'm sure!!!! (U can eat the broken cookies as U work)
