"I have long believed that good food, good eating is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."--Anthony Bourdain

Ingredients:
Cookies:

2¼ cup flour
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp baking soda
¾ tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp ground cloves
¼ tsp salt

¾ cup softened butter (I use European Butter for fat content)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
¼ cup molasses (I use mild "Brer Rabbit")

+/- 2 TBS sugar

Frosting:

1 cup brown sugar (I use light, but dark is o.k., too)
3/4 stick butter (I use salted - either American or European butters are fine here)
1 tsp vanilla
1-2 TBS molasses
1/4 cup (+/-) half-n-half (milk or cream are O.K. too)
2 boxes of powdered sugar

24 pecan halves

Directions:
For the Cookies:

Sift together first 6 dry ingredients in large bowl. Set aside.
In separate bowl, cream together butter, sugar, egg and molasses. Combine with dry ingredients.
Refrigerate several hours. When ready to BAKE, pre-heat oven to 350º.

Roll into 1/2 inch balls and dip into remaining sugar. Place cookie "balls" onto cookie sheet (do not flatten the balls, as they will flatten while baking) and bake for 7-9 minutes - checking oven often, and adjust time and temp as needed. Makes about 2 dozen small cookies. Cool Completely before frosting.

For the Frosting:

In a heavy saucepan, heat the butter until completely melted and beginning to brown. Sitr in brown sugar and cook until bubbly. Add molasses, stirring constantly, and cook for about another minute, and remove from heat. Add SIFTED powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, directly into hot butter/sugar mixture, stir to combine, then beat with electric mixer until smooth, adding vanilla and cream inbetween powdered sugar additions. Beat until velvety. May need to adjust ingredients to get desired flavor and consistency. *While frosting is still hot, frost the cookies generously and top with pecan halves. (*If frosting is too cool it becomes very difficult to frost the cookies- if this happens just re-heat, adding cream and butter if necessary.

Makes about 24 small cookies, perfect for a cookie exchange or holiday dessert table!

Personal Notes:
The Miklaus, Rowley and Homza families have been enjoying these little gems since 1989, when I won "Favorite Christmas Cookie" status at our annual gift and cookie exchange parties! I always double the batch, and make them twice a year- first, during Thanksgiving season, then at Christmas time! They freeze and pack well, too. Dane, my youngest son, who owns a Fitness Training Studio in Orange County, CA ("WORK" Training Studio... www.weworkforit.com) can't get enough of these, and are one of his only "guilty pleasures"! If I don't send he and his wife Kara several annual "care packages" I become persona non-grata real quick-like! Enjoy!

Lancie!
