¾ cup soft shortening
1¼ cups brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
3 eggs
3 cups sifted Softa Silk Cake Flour or
2¾ cups sifted flour
1½ tsp. baking soda
1½ tsp. cinnamon
¾ tsp. nutmeg
¾ tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. salt
1½ cups buttermilk

Pre-heat oven to 350ºF. Grease and flour 2 - 9" layer pans or 1 - 13"x9" pan.
Cream together until fluffy: shortening, brown sugar and white sugar. Beat eggs together in a separate bowl, then beat thoroughly into shortening/sugar mixture. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Stir, alternating with buttermilk, into the shortening/sugar/egg mixture. Mix until well blended. Bake layers 35-40 minutes. Oblong pan 50-55 minutes. Cake is done when no imprint remains when lightly touching middle of cake. Cool and frost with favorite butter icing.
