"The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found."--Calvin Trillin

I have never made these that I remember; but I put this recipe in here for a trip down memory lane.
A couple years after we moved to Topeka, Kansas in late 1950's, we met Jean and Woody McIntyre.
Woody was in the Air Force - stationed at the base in Topeka. They had no children and we had 3, so when we began our intense card playing every Friday night, they would bring over something to add to a potluck and we would eat, put the little ones to bed and have a night of rook, canasta, spoons, and whatever card game we decided upon; but mostly canasta. We would play until 2 and 3 am before they would go off to their slumber and we would determine whose turn it was to get up with the family in the morning and who would sleep in.
After Grandpa was transferred to North Carolina, we came back one time to visit friends, and they were on that list. Jean brought out dozens of cookies... said she had been baking cookies for weeks! She said she was continually calling Woody to bring home more flour - or more sugar, or whatever the pantry couldn't supply. Unfortunately, our family was so small in age that they hardly consumed 1/10 of what she made. I'm guessing those delicasies were brought out from the freezer for months after our visit.
