2 cups unmelted butter
1/2 cup sifted confectioners sugar
2 egg yolks
2 Tablespoons brandy or orange juice
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 can (4.5 oz.) slivered, blanched almonds (finely ground) or walnuts
5 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. ground cloves *
additional confections sugar

*Mary McNay said you can use whole cloves instead of the ground cloves, but you would need to place a whole clove on each cookie before you bake it.

1. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Blend in the egg yolks, brandy or orange juice, and baking powder. Mix well.

2. Add the ground nuts. Gradually add the flour and continue blending. If necessary, work in the remaining flour with hands or pastry blender.

3. Shape and knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until firm. Form walnut sized balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet.

4. Bake in 350º oven 20 minutes or until browned. Cool slightly, then roll in confectioners sugar.
