4 c. lukewarm water
3/4 c. sugar
Two cakes yeast
2 T. salt
3/4 c. melted lard
Flour to stiffen (about 12 c.)

Directions:
Mix all ingredients in large bowl. Let rise one hour. Knead down and let rise another hour. Shape and let rise until light. Bake in a hot oven (425º) for 20 to 25 minutes.

TIPS: 1) One cake of yeast equals 3 envelopes of yeast. 2) You can substitute the lard with other shortening, but you won't get the authentic taste the lard gives these wonderful rolls!

Personal Notes:
**This is a very old recipe from my paternal grandmother, Blanche Clippinger. My Dad says these are the best rolls ever, and after making them, I whole-heartedly agree!! Dad said my Grandma used to make these rolls to sell at market, as well. I understand she was a very hard-working farm woman that made three home-cooked meals a day for her very hard-working farm family of 8. This was back in the day of the true wood-fired kitchen stoves, and wringer washers, when women were not expected to work outside the home because there was more than enough work to do at home. I am certain I was born in the wrong era, because I would have loved to be a full-time stay-at-home mom/wife! That's just 'me' :) I love being in the kitchen, and being at home 'nesting'.
