1 cup shortening (Any solid shortening may be used. For flavor, use at least half butter or margarine)
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour, sifted
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking powder

Directions:
Directions:
1. Cream shortening and sugar well
2. Beat in egg and vanilla
3. Gradually blend in dry ingredients which have been sifted together
4. Fill cookie press and form cookies on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 375ºF 10-12 minutes. Yields about 60-72 cookies.

VARIATIONS ON BASIC SPRITZ COOKIES:
Anise: 4 drops anise oil (add)
1 tbsp orange juice (add)
2 1/2 cups flour, sifted (substitute for amount in basic recipe)
CARAMEL: 1/4 cup granulated sugar (substitute for sugar in basic recipe)
1/2 cup brown sugar (also substituted for sugar in basic recipe)
1/4 tsp baking soda (substitute for baking powder in basic recipe)
