2 1/4 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 tsp baking powder
4 1/2 cups flour
salt

Directions:
Cream butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla very well. Mix in dry ingredients. Chill.
Roll out, cut into fancy shapes. Decorate with bits of glazed fruit or sprinkles, then bake carefully at 400°
You can bake these undecorated and ice them when cool, or bake a wee loop of string into the cookies to hang on the tree.
We used to bake them plain and not too dark. when they were cool we would decorate them with egg yolk paint, using small paint brushes.
Egg yolk Paint: 1 egg yolk and 1/4 tsp water. Blend well. Divide among several small dishes or egg cups. Add food colouring to each cup. Have fun!!

Personal Notes:
This is a basic sugar cookie. Use it any time. Bake with 1/2 red or green cherry in the centre, or a big seeded raisin, or heart shapes covered with pink icing for Valentine Day. Use your imagination. These are great for class parties too.
