1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup regular sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
1/2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
1 cup semisweet chocolate pieces or raisins

Directions:

1. in large mixing bowl stir together the flour, both kinds of sugar, salt, and soda. Add the 1/2 cup shortening, egg, milk, and vanilla. Stir with wooden spoon till well mixed, or mix with your hands. Mix in the oats and the chocolate pieces or raisins.

2.With adult help, turn oven to 350. Grease 1 or 2 cookie sheets with some shortening.

3.Drop dough from the teaspoon to make small mounds about 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Push dough off one spoon with another spoon.

4.With adult help, put cookie sheet into oven. Bake for 12 minutes. With adult help, remove from oven. Use pancake turner to lift cookies onto cooling rack. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with rest of dough. Turn off oven.
