2/3 c. brown sugar
2/3 c. molasses
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
3/4 TBS. baking soda
2/3 c. butter
1 egg
3 1/2 to 4 c. flour

In a large pan heat sugar, molasses and spices to boiling point.
Add baking soda
Pour mixture over butter in a large bowl
Stir until butter melts. Mixture will be foamy.
Add egg that has been beaten with a fork.
Add sifted four until you have a dough that can be kneaded
knead until well mixed

Chill in refrigerator
Roll out on floured board and cut out shapes
Place on a greased cookie sheet
Bake 350 8-10 minutes

Frost cookies by mixing water into powdered sugar, a little at a time, until the right spreading consistency is obtained. (can dunk cookie in glaze also) Decorate with sprinkles etc.

Grandma Johnson always had pepparkakar cookies at her house during the holidays. When she made this recipe she always tripled the batch!
