1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter, softened
1 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 c. tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. red food color
finely crushed hard peppermint candy, optional

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together powdered sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla. Add sifted flour and salt. Divide dough in half. Into one half of dough, blend 1/2 tsp. red food coloring, mixing well.
Divide dough into equal amounts of small balls, about 1/4 inch. Role one white and one red ball into 2 inch strips. Lay them side by side, press lightly together and twist. Bake on ungreased baking sheets for 8-9 minutes. Remove while still warm, and sprinkle with crushed peppermint candy.
