1/2 c. (1/4 lb.) shortening
1/4 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar (tightly packed)
1 egg
1 c. plus 2 level T. sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 box chocolate Bits
1/2 c. chopped nuts or raisins, optional

Directions:
Directions:
Soften shortening and beat until creamy and add gradually the 2 sugars and beat until very light and fluffy. Add well beaten egg and beat again. Sift flour with salt and soda and add to first mixture. Add vanilla and nuts (if used) then chocolate Bits. Mix thoroughly. Drop from tip of teaspoon onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees until delicately brown (10 to 12 min.). Makes about 50 cookies.
