2 cups self rising corn meal
1/4+cup shortening
1 cup buttermilk
add warm water to adjust consistency if necessary

Preheat oven 400
In iron frying pan add cooking oil to cover bottom and sides of pan
Sprinkle a little corn meal in bottom of pan
Mix corn meal and shortening with hands, add buttermilk, add warm water if mixture needs more liquid.
Pour cornmeal mixture into pan and cook for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and sides come away from pan.
