2 cups brown sugar
1 cup butter milk
4 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt
1 cup lard or shortening
2 tsp. vanilla
1tsp. baking soda
flour to make soft dough

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and lard or shortening, add egg and vanilla, baking powder.
Add baking soda to buttermilk. Add flour and buttermilk mixture alternately to creamed mixture to make a soft dough. Roll out 1/4 in. thick, cut in desired shapes. Sprinkle with sugar or decorative sugar. Bake at 325º until light brown. Will raise when baking.

This is another recipe of Grandma Hoch's that is a trial and error recipe. If the dough is too soft it will not roll out properly, if it is too stiff the cookies get hard. When it is just right, you get a cookie that is great dipped in milk or coffee. I'll be honest, I rarely get my cookies to turn out like Grandma Hoch, but I keep trying, I hope you do too.
