5 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups butter at room temperature
3 cups firmly packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 large eggs
2 packages chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 400º. Mix flour, baking powder, & salt. Beat butter, sugar & vanilla with mixer on medium speed until well blended.

Beat in eggs & add flour mixture slowly beating until well blended. Stir in chocolate chips & nuts.

Drop batter in 2 tablespoon portions 2" apart on ungreased baking sheet. Batter will be stiff.

Bake about 6 - 7 minutes until edges are brown & center of cookie is still pale. Cool cookies on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then remove with a spatula to a wire rack. Store in airtight container or freeze.
