Cake:

1 stick butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold coffee
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup hot water

Fudge Icing:

2 cups sugar
1/4 cup white karo syrup
1/2 cup pet milk
1 stick oleo (or margarine equivalent)
1 heaping teaspoon cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Fudge Cake:
1. Cream together the butter and sugar adding one egg at a time until mixture is smooth.

2. Sift together the flour, cocoa, and salt in a separate bowl then add to the butter mixture.

3. Add the coffee and baking soda. Stir until blended then slowly add the hot water. Mix again. Pour into greased and floured cake pan and bake for 35 minutes.

Fudge Frosting:

While the cake is baking, prepare the fudge frosting as follows:
1. Melt the oleo or margarine on medium low heat.

2. Add the sugar, syrup, pet milk, cocoa, salt and vanilla extract and blend together.

3. Bring mixture to a rolling boil for 1 minute then remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes. Beat icing mixture until you reach a smooth spreadable consistency. Spread on cooled cake.

One of the few recipes we had saved of Great Grandmother Agnes'. I remember getting her fruitcake cookies every year at Christmas. Couldn't she have just packaged up the fudge cake instead?
