2 quarts broken and washed fresh green beans
1 onion (Chopped)
3 slices uncooked bacon
4 small red potatoes (scrubbed and halved)
1 Tbls brown sugar
2 Tbls salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp Baking Soda

Directions:
Directions:
Put green beans in a 4 quart pan and cover with water. Bring to a boil and add 1 tsp. Baking Soda. Water will foam. Drain water off. Rinse beans and cover with fresh water. Bring to a boil again and add other ingredients. Stir well and simmer for a couple of hours. When beans and potatoes are almost done, taste broth and add salt as needed.

Grandma always cooked her green beans outside in the Wash House. Since most of us don't have a Wash House, the stove will work fine. I have also put them in the Crock Pot on low all day while at work and they are very good.
