Butter a cookie sheet.

Mix together sugar, molasses, butter and vinegar in a heavy skillet. Cook on medium-high heat until boiling, then turn down to simmer. Do not stir the mixture while it is simmering. Cook until it reaches the soft crack stage on a candy thermometer. Add baking soda to mixture, stir well, then pour into the buttered cookie sheet. Let it cool until you can handle it, then pull until it hardens and whitens. Twist the strand and cut into pieces with scissors. Wrap in cellophane or wax paper
