1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup light brown sugar (packed)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp. soda
Filling:
8 oz. pitted dates
1/4 cup sugar
3 cups water
dash salt
chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream margarine, add brown sugar, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla and egg. Beat until light. Add sifted dry ingredients. Chill until firm enough to roll.
To make filling: cut dates in small pieces, bring to boil with 1/4 cup sugar, dash salt and 1/3 cup water. Simmer 5 minutes. Stirring often. Add nuts and cool.
Half the dough. Roll each half on floured wax paper into 9x13" rectangle. Spread with filling. Roll up tightly. Chill over night. Slice 1/8" thick. Bake at 375º for 10 minutes.
